Bear-Human Interactions in The Hudson Valley
This summer, there have been a handful of bear and human interactions and conflicts across the Hudson Valley.
A few have stood out to us.
In May 2026, a woman in the Catskill area was attacked by a bear while she was working in her yard. She said in a statement "when I turned around, he was already up on his hind legs and he just kind of smacked me."
Then the bear, trampled over her and ran across the street.
In Pine Bush a woman took her dog out for a bathroom break back in June when a bear appeared at the tree line. Her dog started barking, the bear charged and attacked her dog.

The dog was injured during the encounter, but was on the road to recovery.
One may think with stories like that, that black bears are considered the most dangerous animals in New York state, however, the data says otherwise.
What is Considered The Most Dangerous Animal in New York State?
The website called World Population Review shared data that identifies the animals that are most likely to kill people in each state.
Rattle snakes, moose, deer and bears make several appearances on the list. What animal poses the biggest threat in New York State?

Mosquitos.
Some may be thinking that mosquitos being dangerous is ridiculous, but they do pose serious health risks.

Human Vs. Animal Conflict in New York State
The Department of Environmental Conservation sporadically shares ways to keep New Yorkers safe if they ever encounter a dangerous wild animal.
In most cases, like with bears, the DEC recommends bringing in or locking up any types of food sources.
Bring you garbage cans inside and take down your bird feeders. If you see animals like coyotes or moose, your best bet is to give yourself lots of distance between yourself and the animal.
