New York Officials Mourn the Loss of State Trooper
Governor Kathy Hochul, along with numerous law enforcement agencies, has shared condolence messages following the passing of a decorated New York State Trooper, but why aren't flags flying at half-staff in New York?
Earlier this week, we learned that a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police tragically died in an early morning motorcycle accident while traveling on the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill, NY.

Many law enforcement agencies across New York State shared condolence messages following the passing of Sergeant Barnett, including the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, which posted,
"Sheriff Kirk Imperati and the men and women of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office express profound sadness at the passing of Sergeant/Station Commander Nigel Barnett."
The post explained that before joining the State Police, Sergeant Barnett served as a Dutchess County Correction Officer, where he demonstrated commitment to public service from the very beginning of his career and "wasn't just a respected member of New York State Police, but a trusted partner with many across Dutchess."
New York Governor Extends Condolences
New York Governor Kathy Hochul shared a message on Tuesday saying,
"Today, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of Sergeant Nigel K. Barnett of New York State Police Troop K. A 19-year veteran and Station Commander, he dedicated his life to service and sacrifice. My deepest condolences to his loved ones and colleagues."
Following the post, many New York residents wondered if the Governor would order flags to fly at half-staff across New York in honor of Sergeant Barnett. The Governor is the only official in New York who can issue an executive order to fly flags in New York at half-staff. It's unclear whether the Governor will issue the flag order, but when a decision is made, we will update this article.
