Phone Money Scam in New York Leads to in Warning from Sheriff
We are rolling into the holidays fast and there will be a lot of hustle and bustle. During this time it is important we pay attention so that we don't fall victim to someone taking our holiday cash.
This time of year is popular for scammers. They know we are busy and not likely to keep track of our purchases. They also know it is a time for families to gather so family-type scams are popular this year. These would be the ones where someone pretends to be a family member and asks for money.
Sullivan County Sheriff Warns of Scammers New Topic
Recently the Sullivan County Sheriff's office shared a scam that has been going around this week which has many residents hesitant to pick up their phones. The Sheriff's office received numerous calls about someone in personating a Deputy.
According to a warning issued by the Sullivan County Sheriff's office a male caller claims to be a deputy, Deputy Cook. They then explain that the person answering the call has a fine for missing jury duty. They tell the person they owe a fine and could be arrested.
Unfortunately, people have fallen for this. They have purchased the requested gift card, A Green Dot money card. Once the card is brought the person is asked to call the fake Deputy back with the card number

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office warns that you will never be contacted over the phone to pay a fine and never for jury duty. If you believe you have been scammed be sure to notify your local law enforcement.
