When was the last time you had to purchase a thermometer? Was it one of the fancy ones that you put in the ear? Does it simply scan your forehead or does it go under your tongue and beep?  So many choices today, right? What about the thermostat in your home? Is it a dial? Does it have a digital readout?

Or is it one of the old ones that has a little stick that moves, giving you an approximate idea of what the temperature is in the house? Are these types of thermostats now illegal in New York State? Did NYS also make a rule about those old thermometers that had mercury in them, the ones your grandmother had to shake to clear? Here's what New York State has to say about both things.

No, you cannot purchase a mercury-based thermometer in New York State and haven't legally been able to do so since January 1, 2005. If you have one, that is fine to use it, even though there has been a great number of improvements in all things thermometers. If you break the thermometer and the mercury in it gets loose, there are certain ways to properly dispose of it.

No these types of thermostats are no longer available to purchase in New York State now, and if you have one in your home, you are probably fine, until you need to replace it. If you need to replace your home thermostat, you will have to put in one that is updated and does not have mercury. There is also a chance that you will need to swap this kind of thermostat if you are selling your home (ask your realtor).
