A recent update now has more than have of the states in the U.S. impacted by a jalapeño recall. As of September 15th, the foods containing recalled jalapeños (due to salmonella contamination) are now in Class I, which is the most serious recall category within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Ongoing Jalapeno Issue

Over the summer, the FDA issued a warning to all distributors, wholesalers, manufacturers, restaurants and food service companies regarding recalled jalapeños. Several prominent restaurants, including QDOBA and Chipotle had received product imported by the Coast Citrus Distributors (Sinaloa, Mexico), the company that recalled the jalapeños due to salmonella concerns.

As the recall remained 'ongoing' throughout August and now into September, an increase in cases has resulted in a massive recall and 'highest risk classification.'

'Highest Risk Level' Recall Issued

As of September 15th, the FDA has now classified 25 Taylor Farms products in the Class I category, meaning these items are in the highest risk level. Yahoo News, with regard to the latest update and classification, indicated the following about a Class I recall:

a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death

Items impacted by the recall have been sold at major stores such as Walmart and Trader Joe's.

According to Newsweek, to date there have been no reported cases in New York, however, FDA enforcement records do indicate that the recalled products were in fact distributed in New York state, among the other 26 states currently on the list.

A suggestion from Yahoo News as this recall list continues to grow:

If you regularly shop the prepared food section at major grocery stores, you may want to check your fridge. A widespread recall involving everything from salsas and guacamole to salads and sandwiches just received the FDA's most serious risk classification.
