I'll admit, i'm not that great when it comes to paying attention to food recalls, but as the parent of an elementary school kid, this one immediately grabbed my attention because it includes frozen pizza.

Frozen Pizzas Sold At Aldi, Walmart, On Recent Recall

An urgent public health alert has been issued by health officials for frozen pizzas and other products sold at Walmart and Aldi locations nationwide over salmonella concerns.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service shared the the following alert on April 30th, with an update released on May 1st:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for meat and poultry products containing FDA-regulated dairy ingredients that may be contaminated with Salmonella. FSIS expects additional downstream products will be identified as this ingredient recall progresses. As more information becomes available, FSIS will update this public health alert. Consumers should check back frequently

What Should Consumers Look Out For?

Firstly, consumers are encouraged to check their pantry, refrigerators and/or freezers for products including:

  • MAMA COZZI’S BISCUIT CRUST COOKED PORK BELLY CRUMBLES, COOKED BACON TOPPING, PEPPER & ONION BREAKFAST PIZZA (ALDI)

FSIS reports that there have been NO confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption to date, but anyone concerned about a reaction is advised to contact a health provider. They also indicated the following:

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial food borne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6 hours to 6 days after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment.
