These Rules of the Road Don’t Apply to All New Yorkers?
It's been a bit since i've documented my travels and crazy encounters on our Hudson Valley roadways, but the past few days truly have me wondering if I'm the one that's doing it wrong. You may remember me feeling a similar way a few years back; I was so blown away after a number of bold moves on the road, culminating with one guy pulling a u-turn over a divider/sidewalk in Pougkeepsie where I felt like I was in a real life Mario Kart game. I just had to document my thoughts:
READ MORE: Route 9 or Rainbow Road?
This week though, in a 48-hour span I was left truly speechless after some of the insane moves that my fellow motorists were pulling on busy roadways. Let's break this down.
Scenario 1: Sidewalks & Dividers Are Now Motorcycle Passing Lanes
During Wednesday morning's commute to the radio station in Poughkeepsie from my house in Wappingers, I was stopped at a light on Rt. 9 and there was a motorcycle a few cars behind me. I guess he wasn't interested in waiting at the red light like the rest of us losers, so he went up onto the median between 9 north and south, you know it has that step up with the small sidewalk/landscaping, got around us and made an illegal left hand turn.
I didn't know this was an option!
Scenario 2: Merging is Lame, Ride The Shoulder/Grass and Pass Everyone
After my show this week I was on my way to New Paltz from Poughkeepsie, taking 9W through Highland. I'm sure many are aware of the area where you make that left from 9W onto 299, there's 2 turning lanes and kind of a zipper merge into one lane once you get onto 299. People are generally decent in this area about allowing the natural flow of traffic happen, every other car goes into one line.
Not for my guy driving the grey Hyundai though, he wasn't interested in that every other car situation. This guy didn't even wait for a break in traffic, he zipped at warp speed (think Indy 500 style) up the shoulder, narrowly missing the bumper of my one-month-old car, even riding on the grass. Eventually he passed the entire line of cars that had just made the turn, leaving all of us in the dust wondering what just happened.
I guess what i'm looking for here, other than just an outlet to vent, is to know if you have also experienced people doing pretty ballsy stuff that could directly impact the rest of us following the rules of the road? Let us know.
