It's always cool to hear about local athletes getting a chance in the spotlight, so it's pretty exciting that Joe Panik of Hopewell Junction, a graduate of John Jay High School, made his debut for the San Francisco Giants this weekend.

On Saturday, he entered the game as a pinch hitter, and then started at second base on Sunday, getting not only his first hit in the big leagues, but also his first RBI on a 9th inning double, helping the Giants secure a 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

If his performance in AAA with the Fresno Grizzlies is any indication, games like the one he had yesterday should be a common occurrence: he batted .321 with a .382 on-base percentage.
