One of Newburgh’s Most Beautiful Restaurants is Closing

Many Hudson Valley residents are mourning the loss of one of their favorite restaurants.

Certain closures are harder than others, with some businesses hardly hanging their "open" sign before needing to shutter back up again. Things seemed to be different, however, for one special restaurant in Newburgh, NY. With strong support from the community and one of the most beautifully decorated spaces in the Hudson Valley, this was an announcement that few saw coming.

Mama Roux Closing in Newburgh, NY

Mama Roux, a southern-cooking-meets-French-cuisine restaurant that opened back in 2019, announced their plans to close earlier this week. "BOY THAT WAS A FUN RIDE!!", began their recent Facebook post. "Mama's going on to a new chapter. Thank you to all of our guests for supporting us for the last 4 years."

What set Mama Roux apart from other newer businesses wasn't just their original and welcomed approach to their food, but the environment that they created both with their restaurant as well as within the Newburgh business community. Recognized by the City of Newburgh as a business that is "foundational to [the] local economy", many were left shocked by the announcement.

"It’s sad we had such a great time there", lamented a Newburgh resident. "So sorry to see you close. I will miss the gumbo and fine hospitality", said another. The restaurant itself was so beautifully decorated that it even hosted wedding ceremonies. It also leaves a hole in the local entertainment scene.

Drag Brunch at Mama Roux

Popular drag brunches were a cornerstone of Mama Roux, with performers and diners packing the restaurant on the last Sunday of each month.

The last day of business for Mama Roux is scheduled for Sunday, October 8th. Until then, Mama Roux is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday and brunch on Sunday. Visit their website here.
