Since 2020, thefts of these two brands have surged by as much as 1000%.

The sudden spike traces back to a viral TikTok trend, with videos demonstrating how to exploit vulnerabilities in certain models.

A trend dubbed “The Kia Boys” started in October 2022, showing thieves how to use a simple USB connector to bypass ignition systems on Kias and Hyundais made between 2011 and 2021.

On October 23, 2022, six teenagers aged 14 to 19 stole a Kia Sportage in Buffalo, New York. Four of the teenagers were killed when they subsequently crashed the stolen car. The Buffalo Police Department linked the incident to the Kia Challenge

.

In response, Hyundai set up pop-up clinics nationwide to install anti-theft software upgrades on affected vehicles, while Kia also announced security improvements at the end of 2023.

To help New Yorkers keep their cars out of thieves’ hands, NICB recommends a few key steps:

  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
  • Hide valuables out of sight, such as in the glove box or trunk.
  • Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
  • Do not leave the area while your vehicle is running.
  • If your vehicle is stolen, call law enforcement and your insurer immediately—reporting quickly increases the chances of recovery.

These thefts are hitting close to home—my friend Ryan even had to set up a stakeout to watch for suspicious activity in our neighborhood.

Let’s just say it ended in a confrontation you’ll want to read about
