My Car Was Broken Into 4 Times This Year in Poughkeepsie, Here’s How I Stopped It
A Reluctant Expert on Car Crime
Since moving to Poughkeepsie in June 2024, I've become an unwitting expert on car break-ins. Believe it or not, my vehicle has been violated four times—though, thankfully, no windows have been smashed. Instead, I’ve inadvertently played host to a thief or two, leaving my doors unlocked due to my own forgetfulness. Sure, some might scoff and blame me, and I’ll admit, I deserve a little of that. But let’s be real: nothing quite matches the feeling of being violated by a random stranger!
The Thief’s Shopping List
The third and fourth incidents were especially infuriating. I was on high alert, double-checking my locks, but somehow, the thief managed to get in. I’ve lost a collection of phone chargers, my favorite sunglasses, a not-so-fancy pair of glasses, a hefty bag of dog food, and a few random odds and ends. You’d think I was running a thrift shop out of my car!
Operation Stakeout
Last night, I decided enough was enough. I turned my living room into a stakeout, complete with dim lighting and an air of seriousness. Around 10 PM, I spotted a tall guy in a white hat and blue tracksuit—talk about a fashion faux pas for a car thief! He was ducking behind cars like he was playing hide-and-seek.
A Showdown with the Thief
I couldn’t resist. I shouted, “Having trouble with the locked cars?” Startled, he muttered something about tying his shoes. “How many cars does it take to tie your shoes?” I shot back.
He didn’t appreciate my sense of humor and scurried away, swearing at me like I was the criminal. To the would-be thief: get a job, show some decency, and may karma visit you tenfold. And remember, next time, leave the hat at home!
