Massive New “Forever Wild” Land Added to the Hudson Valley
Nearly 1,000 acres of new land has just been added to a Hudson Valley preserve, and thanks to the New York State Constitution, it will remain that way forever.
While there are countless nature destinations (and nearly 200 hundred state parks) in New York, outdoor enthusiasts can celebrate the fact that the number keeps growing. Just weeks after plans were unveiled for a brand new state park further north, Ulster County now has news of its own.
What Is "Forever Wild" Land in New York State?
Land designated as "Forever Wild" is protected from any further development beyond what the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation deems necessary to allow residents to enjoy what the land has to offer.
"Forever Wild" Parks in New York State
While the famous (and enormous) Adirondack State Park (above) might be the most famous "forever wild" park, there are others further south, including a separate initiative by New York City parks. The recent announcement, however, was focused in the Catskills.
Catskill Forest Preserve Receives New "Forever Wild" Land
"New York State has added 900 acres of 'forever wild' land to the Catskill Forest Preserve in Ulster County—the largest addition to the Preserve since 2011", began a recent post from the NYS DEC (below).
New York's Environmental Bond Act Funds New "Forever Wild" Land Purchase
As the NYS DEC shared, the new land was also the first purchase made through the Environmental Bond Act, a $4.2 billion fund approved by New York voters in 2022 that specifically supports environmental and community-oriented efforts.

The land, located in the Town of Olive, is also near the Ashokan Reservoir. Officials say the acquisition will also serve to further protect water quality of the reservoir, another tenet of the Environmental Bond Act.
Speaking of the Ashokan, the beautiful drive is one of the most scenic in the Hudson Valley. Check out more below.
