A New York-based, employee-owned store is coming soon to Newburgh... but you wouldn't be blamed if you hadn't heard of it before.

When Big Lots announced their store closure earlier in the year, many residents were cautiously optimistic about which store would fill the space on North Plank Rd. The new business, which is set to open soon, could surprise Newburgh shoppers in several ways.

Freshtown Marketplace Coming to Newburgh, NY

The grocery store set to open their latest New York State location is called Freshtown Marketplace, a brand that is part of the PSK Supermarkets family of stores. While Newburgh locals might easily write the store off as another large chain, the company is actually 100% based in New York.

PSK Supermarkets have 18 stores in New York State, including locations in Dutchess, Columbia, Putnam, and Sullivan counties in addition to New York City locations. The new Freshtown Marketplace will be the brand's first store in Orange County. It is also one of the few companies that is employee-owned.

Employee-Owned Grocery Store

PSK Supermarkets President Noah Katz shared that in 2021, PSK Supermarkets made the decision to make the brand employee-owned in response to the outstanding job employees did during the pandemic. Here's what that means:

What Does Being an Employee-Owned Company Mean?

Broadly speaking, employee-owned businesses give at least a 50% stake in the company to employees, meaning they have individual ownership in overall value and profits which extend beyond standard paychecks.

Freshtown Marketplace is Hiring in Newburgh

A sign outside the new Freshtown in Newburgh advertises that the store is hiring. "People who work for us typically retire with us", Katz shared in reference to the positive way in which he says PSK Supermarkets treat their employees. Here's what (future) employees and customers can expect:

What to Expect at New Freshtown Supermarket in Newburgh, NY

Each store location is designed differently depending on its location. While their location on Long Island has more of a "city look" (above), Katz says that the new store in Newburgh will have more of a "Farmstead" feel.

Katz hopes that Newburgh residents will experience the "best of both worlds" at Freshtown in Newburgh, specifically the experience of shopping at a locally-based supermarket that still has the buying power of larger brands.

Katz shares that being part of the grocery co-op Allegiance Retail Services allows them to "better compete with big-box retailers and major chains in the area" while maintaining their hometown feel. "We are looking forward to serving you with great low prices and world-class service", Katz said.

LOOK! Abandoned Orange County Chopper HQs in Newburgh-TLC's 'American Chopper'

WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. By doing so you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing on private property.
In 2003, a father-son business reality show hit the Discovery Channel. It was called American Chopper and it followed the custom motorcycle-building business of the Teutul family out of Newburgh, NY. Paul Sr. owned the shop with sons Paul Jr. and Mikey working in the business. There was a slew of cast and characters. The center of the show wasn't just the amazing custom motorcycles built for celebrities and others, it was the volatile relationship between Sr. and Jr. The show ran for 12 seasons before the two could no longer get along. It ended up in lawsuits and the two not talking for ten-plus years. In the past few years, the business moved to Florida. This left the 61,000-square-foot headquarters for sale and abandoned. Take a look at what remained of Orange County Choppers.
