This seems to be the year for bear cubs to be discovered in need of assistance with no Mom in sight. Over the winter, the Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center took in quite a few.

North Country Wild Care recently shared the story of this little bear who was spotted trying to handle life on his own. Fortunately, a homeowner realized the little guy needed help and then called people who could help.

North Country Wild Care Helps Rescue Tiny Bear in New York

According to the social media post, the story starts when a concerned person called North Country Wild Care to report a young bear who appeared to be weak and alone. They witnessed the bear trying to climb a tree, but instead the cub ended up collapsed at the base.

The next step in the story comes with help from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. With the DEC's help, a trap was set on April 9th. Unfortunately, the bear cub was a no-show.  Then, on April 15th, the call came that the cub was finally in the trap.

North Country was the group that took the bear to Friends of the Feathered and Furry (FFFWC), who happen to be the only licensed facility in New York State that can care for bear cubs. When the cub arrived, he weighed in at 17 pounds, which is well under the expected weight of a cub that age.

Who are the Friends of the Feather and Furry Wildlife Center

The FFFWC cared for 6 bears over the winter, and currently, if I have done my math correctly, they have 8 more bear cubs and yearlings they are caring for at the center. They are a 501(c)3 based in Hunter, New York.

The FFFWC has cared for and rehabilitated hundreds of animals over the years since they were founded. Their goal is to return every animal back out into the wild. If you want to help, they have an Amazon wish list you can always pull from for donations, or just send money that works, too.
