New York Expands Access to Fluoride Treatments for Kids
Improving Pediatric Dental Care
A new piece of legislation signed into law in New York will improve access to fluoride treatments for children, making it easier for them to receive preventive dental care. The law now allows registered dental assistants and licensed practical nurses to apply topical fluoride varnish to children’s teeth, expanding the number of licensed professionals authorized to provide this important treatment. By broadening the pool of providers, the state aims to increase the availability of fluoride treatments and improve pediatric dental health across New York.
Fluoride's Role in Preventing Cavities
Fluoride is proven to prevent cavities by strengthening tooth enamel and making it more resistant to decay. For many children, fluoride treatments are a critical part of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing tooth decay, a leading health issue for children. The new law is designed to help make these treatments more widely available, ensuring more children can benefit from the protective effects of fluoride.
Addressing Health Disparities
This legislation, S.9308A/A.7402B, is a significant step toward improving dental health for all children, particularly in underserved communities. State Senator Nathalia Fernandez, a strong advocate for the bill, emphasized its importance in addressing health disparities: “Dental disease should never stand in the way of a child’s health or success. By expanding access to fluoride treatments, this legislation ensures more children can receive the preventive care they need, regardless of their circumstances.”
A Step Toward Better Access
Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes also praised the law’s potential to improve children’s overall health: “Good dental health is a critical component of overall health, and I will continue to explore ways to ensure as many children as possible receive fluoride treatments.”
With the passage of this legislation, New York is taking important steps to break down barriers to dental care and ensure all children have the opportunity to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
