A New York State wildlife rescue group has posted a warning as well as a reminder to their fellow residents after a protected bird was brought to their clinic with gunshot wounds and a broken wing.
New York skies are filled with some amazing sights, from the peregrine falcons that nest on nearly every Hudson River bridge to the remarkably-recovered bald eagles found throughout the state. At least one resident, however, doesn't seem to see the value of at least one amazing creature.
Protected Hawk Shot in Upstate New York
"This is Cleo, a female juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. She came into care last weekend after being shot with a pellet gun", began a recent post by North Country Wild Care (below). They went on to explain that not only was the shooting inhumane, it was against the law.
How the Migratory Bird Treaty Act Protects New York Birds
The young hawk, nicknamed Cleo, is just one of the birds that fall under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a document meant to prevent the "killing, capturing, selling, trading, and transport" of many birds, including the red-tailed hawk. So why was Cleo shot?
X-Rays of Injured Red-Tailed Hawk Show Extensive Injuries
X-rays of the injured bird show multiple pellets in her body and wing, as well as broken bones reportedly caused by the shooting. The rescue center seemed to have an idea as to why they think young Cleo was targeted, and it has to do with livestock protection:
Even if you feel [hawks] are attacking your chickens you CANNOT shoot them. If you have a real issue with hawks repeatedly, a special depredation permit is needed in advance and you have to prove that you have already tried non-lethal deterrents.
New York Birds Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
Worldwide, there are over 1,100 birds listed under the protection act including New York residents like the red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawk, barn owl, and peregrine falcon. A full list can be found here.
