On Tuesday, New York State Police, the Rhinebeck Police Department and the Red Hook Police Department announced a joint investigation into several suspicious incidents in Rhinebeck and Red Hook.

At least four times, twice in each town, police were told an older man had "suspicious contact with children." The man was described as being short with grey facial hair and driving a blue pickup truck, possibly a Chevrolet.

Police said no crimes were committed but were hoping for help in finding the man so they could interview him.

On Friday, New York State Police said they identified the man involved in the suspicious incidents in the town of Rhinebeck.

An investigation determined no crimes were committed and it was merely a matter of mistaken identity with coincidental physical descriptors in common with the incidents in Red Hook, police say.

The incident in Red Hook remains an ongoing investigation. If anyone believes they may have information regarding the identity or location of the man they are asked to please contact State Police at (845) 677-7300.

Investigators want to remind parents to speak to their children regarding strangers approaching them and to always be aware of their surroundings.
