With the sun shining bright in June and temperatures already hitting 90 degrees, it's almost easy to forget the absolute nonstop rain we had in May... almost.

With statistics including a lack of a dry weekend since the winter months, it was easy to feel like the wetness wouldn't end. Rainfall totals across New York State were not only high, but record-breaking in many areas.

Record-Setting Rainfall in May 2025

In neighboring states like Pennsylvania, some towns saw historic levels of precipitation, with areas like Mount Pocono and Middletown, PA seeing the most rainfall in their recorded history. Some cities in the Hudson Valley weren't far off from their own records.

Hudson Valley Rainfall Totals in May 2025

At the end of May, the National Weather Service shared rainfall totals for the region, and sharing where 2025 landed in the record books. In Dutchess County, one city was included on the impressive list.

Rainfall Totals for Poughkeepsie, NY in May 2025

According to the NWS, Poughkeepsie, NY experienced its third-wettest May since recordkeeping began in 1931. The 8.1 inches of rainfall in 2025 was roughly three inches shy of the record set back in 1981 (below).

Records show that the wettest May in the eastern United States was in Manchester, New Hampshire in 2006, when more than 12 inches of rain fell. While there is far less rain in the current forecast, there are some other weather warnings being issued in the Hudson Valley.
