Remembering New York's Drought of 2024

What this constant rain can make residents forget is that only a few months ago, the state was facing an unheard of drought. In November 2024, the severe lack of rainfall meant that even New York City declared a drought warning for the first time in more than two decades.

New York's Delaware Aqueduct Project

While the drought conditions of 2024 were amplified by the temporary closure of New York's Delaware Aqueduct (the longest tunnel on the planet), the current (and constant) rain of 2025 might put the state in the record books for a different reason.

Constant Rain in New York's Hudson Valley

According to the National Weather Service, not only has the rainfall been constant, but the precipitation totals so far in the month of May are far outpacing previous averages (below).

While cities like Manchester, NH and Reading, PA have seen rainfall totals that could be described as extreme, the Hudson Valley isn't far behind. In Poughkeepsie, NY, for example, the 4.87 inches of rain is more than double the average of two inches usually experienced in May.
