Summertime is officially here, another heat wave is about to hit the Hudson Valley head on, and we're all trying to figure out how to stay cool and hydrated.

The River Pool Opens For 18th Season

Given how much there is to do here in the Hudson Valley, especially on the outdoorsy side of things, it may be hard to keep up with all these cool 'hidden treasures.' Perhaps you didn't even know that Beacon is home to a swimming option, and a fun one at that.

The River Pool, located at the Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, is a pretty unique setup, allowing 'riverfront' swimming in a contained vessel. The pool is attached to the riverbed using cables, which allows it to move with the tide, and measures 17 feet wide and 30 inches deep in total.

The River Pool is a rainbow-colored circular floating pool with a netted bottom securely installed in the Hudson River. It is located off the north shore of Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, in Beacon, NY. Swimmers safely sit, float, and play in the River Pool to cool off while an on-duty lifeguard is present.

There's no cost or registration/reservations required to swim, just show up during operating hours (Tuesday through Sunday 12pm-6pm, weather and lifeguard availability permitting).

Fun Facts About The River Pool

Each year, volunteers are responsible for installing the pool each June, and for taking it out after the season in September. Funding is provided in large part by the Annual Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim which is a fundraiser where swimmers raise money and sponsorships to maintain and operate The River Pool at Beacon. The date for this year's swim is August 1st.

Because the pool itself sits in the Hudson River, it does require inspections and water quality tests. This year, The River Pool received the 'all clear' in record time on June 27th, and officially opened on Sunday June 28th to about 30 swimmers to kick off the season.
