Another unfortunate story in the realm of Higher Education. The past several years have not been kind to colleges and universities nationally, and here in New York we have felt the cuts and closures first hand.

News of a massive New York institution's plans to eliminate just shy of 100 academic programs is said to 'right-size the private nonprofit's offerings and align them with student demand,' this according to Syracuse University's provost.

Syracuse University Eliminating 93 Academic Program Offerings

While many of the college and university changes that we have heard about recently have been primarily due to financial constraints, Syracuse University's decision to eliminate programs is not 'out of financial necessity.' Rather, Syracuse has identified 93 programs as having low or no enrollment, and a 'desire to make the institution's offerings more focused, more distinctive and more aligned with student demand.' This came from the University Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Lois Agnew.

In a letter to the campus community, Provost Agnew reinforced that 'no positions or departments have been slated for elimination.'

Higher Ed Dive, a source dedicated to Higher Education news, published statistics shared by the provost indicating that the 93 programs that have been identified to be cut only had 258 enrolled students, representing '1.2% of the university's roughly 22,000 students.'

While a full breakdown of the impacted programs can be found here, among the 93 impacted by cuts, 41 are bachelor's degrees, 29 graduate degrees and 33 certificate programs.

Impacted advanced certificate programs include Cloud Management, Information Security Management, Public Management and Policy, School Counseling and Trauma-Informed Practice. Bachelor's degree programs in Art Video, Classics, Earth Sciences, Fine Arts, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Piano, Sound Recording Technology are among those impacted. Finally, in Graduate Studies, Computational Science, Healthcare Administration, eSports Gaming, New Media, Social Science and Voice Pedagogy were among the list of areas cut.

A LinkedIn report echoes the idea that the cuts are not financially driven, and shared that there will still be courses and even minors offered in the affected areas.
