I'm well aware of the fact that some of this will sound like a #firstworldproblem, but I feel obligated to say something.

Many of the things i'm about to reference below have been around for a while, but the popularity of this type of of 'convenience' has grown in popularity over the years, especially since covid.

Confession: I Rely Heavily on Grocery Pre-Ordering

The funny thing is, during the pandemic, I think i did the grocery pre-order and curbside pickup like two times, and it was only because I had COVID and didn't want to be a superspreader. Recently though, i'd say over the past 18 months, 99% of my grocery shopping is done via a store app, where I let another person go around the store and pack the items I need for my house for the week. My reason (or justification to myself), is that it saves me both time and money. Time, because I don't have to walk around the store, and money, because less impulse buys.

I'd say 90% of the time they get it perfect, good looking produce, the right color of American cheese at the deli (9 year olds are needy) and whatnot.

However, I did find myself complaining (surprise) after two recent orders that didn't go according to plan, one time where my 1/4lb American cheese order was substituted with a pound of ham, and the other was recently when I received some less than stellar looking zucchini.

These both made me think, am I too reliant on other people for something I should (and can) do myself?

Why Isn't My Order Ready?

Similarly, over the weekend I stopped by a local coffee spot to pick up some gift cards for end of the year gifts and wound up in the middle of a wild interaction. A woman who came in for a pick up order was waiting and began screaming at the people behind the counter for the order not being ready yet. I'm talking leaning over the counter, arms waving, yelling at the poor employees about customer service at the top of her lungs while 10+ customers stood there, jaws on floor, at the exchange. Finally people started to speak up and defend the employees and tried to get the woman to calm down.

Again, this had me thinking, have we become too reliant on other people to do things for us that we then get mad when it isn't done to our liking, or fast enough?

Do you ever find yourself thinking that you probably shouldn't complain if you can easily do it yourself?
