Turkeys might not be the most majestic of the New York birds, but this month, they're the center of attention for environmental professionals.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has a lot on their plate. From helping to rescue hikers (and adorable animals) to protecting backyard trees, there's many important tasks that need their attention. That's one of the reasons the NYS DEC has reached out to the public for help with their turkey project.

Reporting Turkey Sighting in New York State

"Have you seen wild turkeys in New York State recently?", the NYS DEC recently asked on Facebook (below). The post was announcing an annual tradition known as the Summer Turkey Survey.

The Summer Turkey Survey in New York State

While the NYS DEC doesn't have the resources (or time) to conduct an internal wild turkey survey on their own, the hope is to deputize New Yorkers as amateur "turkey hunters" to help divide and conquer the work throughout the state.

Take the NYS DEC's Summer Turkey Survey

The survey is simple, asking residents to report flocks of turkeys they see in their yard or neighborhood. The form (found HERE) asks for date, location and number and gender of turkeys spotted.

About Wild Turkeys in New York State

Wild turkeys are one of the largest and heaviest wild birds in New York State, with males (called toms) tipping the scales at 25 pounds, and females (hens) weighing up to 12 pounds. Young turkeys, which are difficult to gender, are also known as poults.

Moose are another animal being monitored by the NYS DEC (report sightings here), but surveys aren't the only appropriate time to share information on wild animals with professionals. Check out a list of approved animal rehabilitators here to contact in the event of a sick or injured animal.
