Is New York Getting A Professional Women’s Baseball Team?
The short and simple answer, yes, we are. In an announcement this week from The Women's Professional Baseball League, the four cities that will host the four teams in the inaugural season of Women's Baseball have been identified, and the 'Big Apple' is home to one of them.
Women's Professional Baseball League Overview
2026 will be a massive year for women in baseball, as the inaugural season of WPBL will launch as the first 'pro league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League' - yes, the same league that we learned about back in 1992 when A League of Their Own was released.
History in the making has now become reality, as four teams of 15 players per club, will compete with a regular season, playoffs, even an all-star game, this according to ESPN. The WPBL itself was co-founded by the first ever woman to coach for an MLB team (the Oakland Athletics back in 2015), Justine Siegal. The second co-founder is Toronto Maple Leafs CEO Keith Stein. The entire management team can be found here.
Initially, the plans were to have a total of six teams, but the league will officially begin with four for the 2026 launch.

These Cities Will Host WPBL Teams For 2026
In the official announcement on October 21st, the Women's Professional Baseball League has identified their four starting cities, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and New York. Referred to as 'storied sports cities,' the WPBL shared with ESPN that they 'can't wait to connect with the fans who live there and baseball fans across the country.'
There's been rumors and speculation about where the NY-based team will compete, but the league has shared that all of the games for the 2026 season will be at a neutral venue to be identified and announced at a later date.
Open tryouts took place over the summer, and the top 100 players from those have advanced to the WPBL draft, which will take place in November.
As far as the logistics of the game, the season is set to begin in May 2026, last a total of seven weeks with games taking place from Thursday to Sunday, with each team competing in two games per week. You can learn more about the WPBL on their official site, here.
