Oktoberfest is a time of year that most beer nuts look forward to. Is it because of all the lederhosen and dirndls? It probably doesn't have much to do with what people are wearing as much as it has to do with the celebration and oh yeah, the beer.

Starting in early September (and end of August) breweries start the release of their Oktoberfest or Marzen beers (pumpkin beers are another article for another day). But what is a Marzen beer? A Marzen is named after the month that they were typically made in. Marzen is German for March.

A few hundred years ago there was a law (Germany had some strict beer laws back in the day) that said people were not allowed to brew beer between April 24 and September 28. So the beers that were brewed in March had to not only be made in enough quantity to last until September, but they had to be made in a style that would last too.

There are a few Hudson Valley Marzen beers that are popping up, have you tried them? What do you think?

There is a website, Give Them Beer.com, that is making it easier for you to get Oktoberfest delivered to your door. They have selected 6 Marzen beers which they feel represent what you, the consumer, might hope for in an Oktoberfest beer.

Do you like the idea of having the Oktoberfest come to you? Or would you rather be sitting under a tent, looking for lederhosen and dirndls, listening to ompa music?
