When It Comes To Educated States, New York Is…

Not bad, not bad at all.

All things considered, and based on what a lot of people say about us New Yorkers, a recent study determined that we rank among the 'most educated' states, in fact, as a state we are in the top 30th percentile...that is if my math is math-ing properly.

2025 Least and Most Educated States

There's an infinite number of rankings out there, and all sorts of statistics are being thrown at us on a daily basis, but these numbers made me pretty proud to be a New Yorker, and New York college educated as well.

A recent Wallethub survey took a look, state by state, analyzing things like high school diploma rates. college degree holders and at what level of higher education, and university quality statewide.

New York had some pretty decent numbers across the board, and had us sitting just outside of the top 10 smarty-pants states...ok well that's not the technical label for it, but we're doing ok.

New York Ranks 15th On Most/Least Educated List, 2025

With an overall ranking of 15 (out of 50), and a total score of 57.16, New York does very well when it comes to University Quality, ranking #5, is 6th highest with Graduate or Professional-Degree holders, and 9th when it comes to Bachelor's Degrees. It seems like higher education is a priority for the Empire State.

On the converse, New York State came in 44th when regard to High-School Diploma holders.

What's the most educated state for this year? Our New England neighbors, Massachusetts with a total score of 82.28. Ma is one of only ten states that offers FREE statewide community college (with very few eligibility limitations), has the highest percentage of adults over age 25 possessing at least a bachelors, and the highest percentage of those with a grad or professional degree, too.
