9 Wheelchair Accessible Destinations In The Hudson Valley
Looking to have a staycation but want to make sure everyone in your group will attend? Look no further.
For your average person, you don't really have to worry about how you'll get around. But for plenty of people, wheelchair accessibility is a major concern. While we've made a lot of progress with wheelchair accessibility, there's still a long way to go. If you're looking to check out some new spots in the Hudson Valley and want to bring a wheelchair, here is a list of 9 different great destinations to go, according to I Love NY:
Unlike most historic homes, both floors are wheelchair accessible thanks to a lift. Entry to the grounds and all tours is free for one person with a disability and up to three guests if you have the National Parks Access Pass. To get this pass, you need to sign up onsite or by mail before you go and show proof of disability.
If you choose this hot spot in the Hudson Valley, make sure to pick the "Classic Tour" as other options are not fully wheelchair accessible.
This 500-acre landscape of sculptures does away with the classic indoor art museum to provide a truly unique experience. There are paved paths across the property and elevators to get to higher ground, but you will have to go roll on the grass to get close to sculptures. I Love NY recommends taking the narrated tram tour of the lower property nad a docent-led tour of the art on Museum Hill. The tram has a ramp and plenty of space for a scooter or power wheelchair, and people with disabilities are given priority.
Walkway Over The Hudson Historic State ParkThe pathways to the Walkway Over The Hudson are sloped making for an easy wheelchair entrance. There's also an elevator that runs during the day bringing guests up and back down, to the ground below the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge.
The ground floor shop is accessible but there is no elevator to the mezzanine. Thankfully, most things are on the ground floor anyway.
If you're a foodie this is a must go. All dining rooms are wheelchair accessible and so is the campus tour.
