Did You Know There's a NYS Historic Business Registry?

I, for one, had no idea. I've seen historical markers and I was familiar with the National Register of Historic Places.

The New York Historic Business Preservation Registry is fairly new and was established back in 2020 sponsored by Senator Jose Serrano and Assembly member Daniel O'Donnell.

According to their website the HBPR was "enhanced by Chapter 146 of the Laws of 2023 by legislation sponsored by Senator Michelle Hinchey and Assembly member Carrie Woerner."

So what is the the New York State Historic Business Registry? They explain on their website that they are "an honorific program only" that document and honor community mainstay businesses.

This is a great way to honor local business that have played such a big role in local communities across the state.

Businesses that are nominated must meet certain criteria. For instance, the business "shall have operated in the state for 50 or more years with no break in operations exceeding two years."

You can learn more on The New York State website.

With all of that being said, a staple across the Hudson Valley was just honored as part of the NY Historic Business Preservation Registry.

Adams Fairacre Farms: Part of the Hudson Valley Community for Over a Century

The New York State Parks & Historic Sites announced this week that Adams Fairacre Farms would be named to the Historic Business Preservation Registry.

In a statement shared on social media NY State Parks & Historic Sites explains why the popular Hudson Valley grocery store made the cut writing "Adams Fairacre Farms has been owned and operated by the Adams family for three generations."

The posts continues with some of the history behind Adams:

Originating in Poughkeepsie in 1919, they have served the Hudson Valley for over a century. Each generation has had a hand in its current success, expanding to five storefront locations and a wide variety of products from fruits and vegetables to Christmas trees.

They go on to share what locals know and love about Adams: they provide "fresh, locally sourced meat and produce" and contribute to the "Hudson Valley culture and economy."

NY State Parks & Historic Sites concludes with this:

This family business has persevered through history, including the Great Depression, and is a testament to the strength of historic businesses in New York State.
