Bear Caught Fishing in the Hudson Valley
Officials were called into action after a bear was spotted at a popular fishing location in the Hudson Valley.
On Friday, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported responding to a "Nuisance Bear" in Sullivan County.
On Friday Aug. 23, Environmental Conservation Officer Tom Koepf assisted Region 3 Bureau of Wildlife staff with a bear at the Catskill Fish Hatchery in the town of Rockland.
According to the DEC, the Catskill Fish Hatchery is near two of New York State's fabled trout streams, the Beaver Kill and Willowemoc Creek. The facility specializes in rearing brown trout and it maintains a brood stock capable of producing two million eggs. About 115,000 pounds of brown trout are produced annually.
The bear marked the seventh bear that DEC Wildlife staff caught at the facility over the years, due to bears seeing the hatchery fish as easy meals, the DEC reports.
The 192-pound bear was sedated, fitted with a radio collar to track her movements as well as gain valuable data on bear trends and moved from the location, according the DEC.
