Blitzen Trapper played a straightforward rock show at Mountain Jam today, even dipping into a little classic rock – sky-gazing solos and all.

After a groovy 'Thirsty Man' off their latest album 'VIII,' they blasted into a full-throttle take on Joe Walsh's 'Rocky Mountain Way,' using their two-guitar attack to totally nail the iconic song.

The set peaked with 'Furr,' their unlikely, touching story-song about (what else?) transforming into a werewolf. And 'Ramble On,' a Led Zeppelin cover in which singer Eric Earley got to show off his screeching prowess, was a cool surprise.

After the set, backstage, we asked Earley about the band's songwriting influences – particularly in light of his skill at spinning a yarn. He named a very eclectic trio: Townes Van Zandt; rapper Kendrick Lamar and Bob Dylan. Furthermore, he stated that "gangster rap is the only music today that tells stories" nowadays.
