According to the FDA.gov the fall (Back-to-School season) is one of the worst times of year for lice outbreaks. Yes, it can be a year round parental nightmare, but the two times of year that the most cases are reported are in the fall and in January.

Lice are small, approximately the size of a sesame seed and tan to grayish white in color. One myth about the spread of lice is that you can get it from your pets. This is not true. Lice only like human blood. Another myth commonly associated with lice is that you get them from improper hygiene. This is also not true. Lice infections are apparently caused by head to head contact with someone who also has lice. Since lice don't jump or crawl, they work there way from one unsuspecting person to another.

As far as actually getting rid of the little pesky buggers, the FDA has some great tips on their website. Have you had lice or had to deal with lice on one of your children? Do you have tips that you would like to share?
