Former Renegades Minor Leaguer Living in School Bus to Save Cash
Last summer Jack Labosky was playing for the Renegades, but now he's living in a school bus.
Labosky was drafted to the Tampa Bay Rays minor league system after graduating from Duke last year. The relief pitcher immediately started playing for the Renegades as a relief pitcher during the end of the season. According to the News Tribune, Labosky quickly found out that minor leaguers don't make quite as much money as players in the major league.
After receiving a $3,000 signing bonus, Labosky earned $1,100 a month while playing at Dutchess Stadium. The Duke graduate wound up living with a host family in Wappingers Falls while his girlfriend, Madi Hiatt, who he met in high school, lived in California with her parents.
Labosky, who is planning to start the next season in Bowling Green, Kentucky, decided that he didn't want to spend any more time away from Hiatt. But with no chance of getting a raise this season he decided to take matters into his own hands and buy an old school bus for the couple to live in.
The couple purchased the old bus from a private Christian school in Virginia for $4,000 and have put around $9,000 into renovations. The seats were all torn out to make room for living space and Labosky added electric, heating, air conditioning and even plumbing to their mobile palace. There's a shower, toilet, a stove and even enough room for a full-sized bed.
While living in just 172 square feet may seem like a nightmare for most people, Labosky says he's fine with it. The minor leaguer is turning 23 this summer and realized that he doesn't really have any other responsibilities outside of playing baseball, so "why not just take a leap."
