Hudson Valley Drivers: What to Do at a New Blinking Yellow Arrow
You may be confused when confronting a new traffic light that's becoming more popular in New York State.
Have you come across a traffic light that's displaying a blinking yellow arrow?
If you're like me your first thought may be that the light is broken or there's some sort of power outage. That couldn't be further from the truth. Blinking yellow arrows actually have a specific purpose and are becoming more commonplace on local roads.
The New York State Department of Transportation says that illuminated arrows are important traffic lights that every driver should be aware of. Here's what each of them means.
Solid Red Arrow - Drivers may not turn
Solid Yellow Arrow - Drivers are cautioned the light is about to change
Solid Green Arrow - Drivers may turn
Blinking Yellow Arrow - Drivers may turn, but must yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic.
So if you happen to come across a blinking yellow arrow make sure to slow down and check for oncoming traffic. If it's clear to turn you can. If not, you must stop and wait to turn.
