Police and Buses Line Up Outside of Hyde Park Central Schools
As I'm leaving the radio station earlier today, around 3PM this afternoon, I had to travel passed Violet Avenue School in Hyde Park. Where Fulton Street meets Violet Avenue/Route 9G, I was stunned to see buses packed together like sardines with police cars blocking off both sides of the road.
Around the same time, I received a heads up from someone that I know through work that something similar was happening over Ralph R. Smith. Whatever was going on, it was a wider event than what I had seen. To an uninformed bystander such as myself, I was afraid of what possibly could be happening.
Hyde Park Central School District Emergency Release Drill
Fortunately, the incident was nothing to fear. If you go to the Hyde Park Central School District website, you'll be met with an important message that reads,
Friday, October 6th, 2023 - Go Home Early Drill
All schools will be practicing the Emergency Early Release Drill today.
Schools will be dismissing up to 30 minutes early. School buses may drop-off students up to 20 minutes before usual.
I remember having Go Home Early Drills when I was in school, but I don't remember having the police involved to such an extent. That, or having the buses take up all of the road. Now that we are well into the school year, residents should keep in mind school-related events, especially those in which may effect their commutes.
According to the Hyde Park Central School District calendar, Friday, October 6th seems to be the only Go Home Early Drill planned. This does not mean this will be the only event like this. As the calendar states, "As times, dates, and locations may change very quickly, please check hpcsd.org for the most updated information."
It's hard to keep everything straight, hence why it is not a bad idea to review your local school district's calendar. You can view the Hyde Park Central School District's Calendar here. Also, it would be wise to follow your local school districts on social media for all events and alerts. Even if you do not have a child in school, it's best to be aware of what's going on in your community.
