Ramp Closures Scheduled for I-87
The New York State Thruway Authority has issued a traffic advisory for Monday night that extends into later this week for construction that will be ongoing at exit 16 in (Harriman) Orange County. Work that is scheduled to begin Monday night at the I-87 Southbound Ramp of exit 16 will have the ramp closed weeknights through this Friday. Motorist will be asked to follow the posted detours.
The nightly ramp closures at exit 16 affecting I-87 at US Route 6 and NY Route 17 is due to the installation of cashless tolls at the Harriman Toll Barrier. The ramp closure will begin Monday at 9 PM and run through until 6 AM Tuesday morning. The ramp affected will be the southbound off-ramp from I-87 to Route 17 westbound. The closure will happen Monday through Thursday. On Friday they will close the ramp at 9 PM as well but will re-open it on Saturday at 7 AM.
Crews will be installing concrete slabs on the roadway during the overnight hours instead of during the day in hopes that it will cause fewer traffic issues. Motorists that need to access Route 17 westbound during the affected hours should follow the posted detours or select an alternate route. The detour will have southbound drivers traveling to exit 15 A (Sloatsburg - Suffern - NY Routes 17 North and 59) Once the southbound work concludes on Saturday crews will begin on the northbound ramp on Monday, August 5.
Drivers should expect the exit 16 northbound ramp to US Route 6 and NY Route 17 eastbound to be closed from 10 PM to 6 AM starting Monday, August 5. Once again drivers will be asked to find an alternate route or follow posted detours. This closure will run nightly through Saturday, August 10th at 7 AM.
Work on the southbound and northbound ramps is weather dependent so some of these timelines could be subject to change. Remember there will be work zone speed limits posted. Travel information will be posted on the Thruway and can be found online at the Thruway Authority’s website. Motorists can receive real-time traffic alerts on the Thruway’s mobile app, which is available to download for free on iPhone and Android devices.
