Hudson Valley residents are salivating over the idea of Krispy Kreme returning to our area.

In 2004, Krispy Kreme was once readily available in the Hudson Valley. Access to those legendary hot, glazed donuts was something many of us took for granted. The donut mecca was situated on Route 211 in Middletown and cranked out soft, warm donuts all day long. Krispy Kreme donuts were also available at select convenience stores throughout the Hudson Valley, freshly made and delivered each morning.

Sadly, just two years after opening Krispy Kreme suffered from financial problems and decided to close stores across the country including the location in Middletown. That's when the dark times began. Since then, Krispy Kreme ceased to exist anywhere in the Hudson Valley.

There were a few Krispy Kreme sightings here and there including fundraisers organized by local charities and organizations that shipped in warm donuts in exchange for donations. Also, prepackaged donuts can be found in some local stores, but they're nothing like the real thing.

With no other New York locations, Krispy Kreme junkies had to travel to either Scranton, PA or Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut to satisfy their cravings. But now there may be some hope. Some believe that a newly announced investment in New York means that the company could finally be returning to the Hudson Valley.

Krispy Kreme fans who are hoping for a comeback are excited at news coming out of the company's headquarters this week. The legendary donut shop has just announced that they will be opening a new store in Times Square next year. Does this mean that the donut company will finally start opening up stores in our area again?

According to NBC, the new 4,50- square-foot store will be open 24 hours a day and is expected to not only sell fresh donuts but also allow customers to watch the donut making the process. Until now, the only Krispy Kreme location was a small shop in Penn Station.

The new store is expected to draw in more customers than any of their other locations around the world. Other brands that have generated just as much New York City buzz have eventually made their way up to our area, including Five Guys, Chipotle, Pinkberry and Shake Shack. Will Krispy Kreme follow suit?

As of now, Dunkin' seems to have cornered the market on local donuts. Although some independent stores have also been making a name for themselves. Glazed Over Donuts in Beacon was just named the best in all of Upstate New York.

It's clear the Hudson Valley loves their donuts, and with a Krispy Kreme comeback happening, it may only be a matter of time before those hot glazed donuts are once again available in our area.
