Is Poughkeepsie Really Safer Now Than it Was Ten Years Ago?
Talk to anyone who's been living in the City of Poughkeepsie for the past ten years and you may get a different answer to the question of whether their community safer now than it was in 2009. But what do the statistics have to say about it?
There are many ways to judge the safety of a community, but one of the best ways is to look at the statistics. And on paper, Poughkeepsie is only getting safer.
Crime statistics released on Tuesday show a major decline in dangerous activity in and around the City since 2009. The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services have provided numbers of violent crimes in different categories over the past ten years.
Violent crime has dropped from 417 instances in 2009 to 216 in 2018. Robberies are also down to only 59 last year from 274 recorded in 2009. Burglaries have seen a similar drop from 274 to 85.
In other categories, there have also be dramatic reductions in violent crimes. Property crime was cut in half from 1,030 in 2009 to 494 in 2018. Larcenies dropped last year to 374 from almost 700 in 2009 and firearm-related violent crimes dipped from 90 to 43.
Mayor Rob Roll-on admits that there's more to do to make the City safer, but says there are "highly encouraging" signs in these statistics. City Police Chief, Thomas Pape says the price department is "grateful to be making progress on curbing crime in Poughkeepsie."
