On your next job interview in the Hudson Valley, there's one question you won't have to answer. In fact, if a prospective employer asks it, they're going to be breaking the law.

A Hudson Valley senator has been pushing for a bill that was approved by state lawmakers and is expected to be signed into law by Governor Cuomo soon. The law would ban businesses from asking a popular question during job interviews.

According to the Democrat and Chronicle, Senator David Carlucci from Rockland County proposed the bill that would essentially ban employers from asking about an applicant's previous salary. The approved bill makes it illegal for businesses to ask about your pay history. This legislation is aimed at creating a level playing field for women, who have a history of being paid less for doing the same job as men.

The law will go into effect in six months after Cuomo signs the bill into law. The governor has indicated that he plans to approve the bill. While employers won't be able to use your previous earning to set your future salary, job applicants will still be able to disclose pay information on their own in order to negotiate for higher wages.

Women in New York State make just over 86% of what men do. While these statistics are better than the national average, the disparity is something that lawmakers say is unacceptable. They hope that by approving this law, women in the workforce will start to be treated more fairly.
