Diffuser Spotlight: Atlanta’s Psychadelic Rock Band Frute is Carving a New Path

Diffuser sat down with Patrick (bass) and Cassidy (Vocals) of Frute, a psychadelic rock band known for deep grooves and vibey, dark psychedelic sounds. Frute is making waves and is well known for their live shows and improvisation; their sound is atmospheric, with some dark, deep vocals that make it truly unique. A Closer Look at Frute

Frute is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and features hypnotic vocals, which immediately grabbed my attention, along with their psychedelic sound that blends brilliantly. The band was originally formed by brothers Ian Payne (Keys/Vocals) and Matt Payne (Guitar/Vocals), along with college friend Patrick Lydon (Bass/Vocals) and childhood friend Jeff Axelrod (Guitar). The band is made up of UNC grads, and over the years, the lineup has evolved; the current iteration features Cassidy (Vocals) and Ben McEntire (Drums).  The time is now for Frute, and based on our conversation, they are in the pocket creatively and dialed in on their craft.

Albums and Influences

Since then, the band has released two studio albums, an EP, and a live album. Their most recent release, Lots of Letters (2026), is their sophomore studio album featuring 11 original songs and a live visual accompaniment. Frute recorded Lots of Letters in 2024, working closely with audio engineer TJ Elias of Big Trouble Productions to bring the album to life. While their debut album Meridiem and EP Frission introduced Frute’s songwriting, Lots of Letters showcases their more experimental side, inviting listeners to explore deeper layers of the band's vibe.  To get to know Frute, start with the most recent album, then take their live album for a spin to experience a true sense of their sound.

From their arrangements, Frute is clearly influenced by Phish, as Patick and Cassidy shared, though I can also hear the influence of The Grateful Dead, Goose, Dogs in a Pile, and Billy Strings as well.

Frute has had a busy year of touring, festivals, and working on their next album, and stoked for their upcoming tour announcements and music.
