Discount Retailer Announces its Ready to Make a Comeback

A popular big-name discount retailer has announced they are planning to reopen some of its recently closed stores.

One of the biggest going-out-of-business stories in the last year or so has included one of the biggest names in discount retail. Big Lots announced in 2024 that they would be filing for bankruptcy protection and in doing so, they would be closing many of its hundreds of locations across the county.

Big Lots Closing Stores

Back in December, it was reported that Big Lots was close to a deal with a capital management group that would reportedly save some of its locations from closing. Unfortunately, that deal fell through and Big Lots began going out of business sales at its remaining stores. A few months later it was reported that Gordon Brothers, the company handling its liquidation had passed control of numerous Big Lots locations to a new company, which has big plans.

Big Lots Making a Comeback?

Variety Wholesalers, who took control of approximately 200 Big Lots locations, announced recently that they have a plan to reopen select locations. According to the business website Irish Star, they plan to "conduct four phases of soft openings" at some of the recently acquired 200 locations. The "first wave of revitalizations" will include reopening nine stores in six states in April, with more locations expected soon.

According to the Big Lots website, the six locations are located in Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Virginia, Louisiana, and North Carolina. The company didn't provide any of the brick-and-mortar store addresses but they did say that each of the Big Lots stores will reopen on April 10th, 2025. They posted the big news on Facebook saying

"BIG NEWS! Your new BIG LOTS! is coming soon! New ownership, fresh products & unbeatable closeouts at prices so low, you'll want to shout!"

 

Will Big Lots Come Back to New York?

It's unclear if the new owners have acquired any of the New York Big Lots stores but the company did say they have plans for more openings later this year. When they announce more locations we will update this article.
