A work crew in upstate New York reportedly killed a snake in "self-defense" after it tried to attack them.

Earlier this week we told you about a work crew from Albany Water that was attempting to fix a water main in upstate New York when a gigantic snake reportedly came out from the woods and slithered its way to the work site.  At first, it was reported that when the crew saw the snake they called the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to report it, and soon after a DEC crew responded to capture and remove the snake.

Gigantic Snake Comes Out of the Woods in New York

Numerous details of the original story were incorrect starting with the size and type of snake that was recovered at the work site according to WRGB. Initially, it was reported that the snake was a 14-foot Boa Constrictor that was captured and removed by the DEC after it came out of the woods. That information was incorrect as new details provided by NYSDEC state that the massive snake found by Albany Water Dept. employees Friday, was identified as a 12 foot 10 inch long reticulated python.

Snake Attacked Workers

New details also revealed that the snake was discovered while the crew was clearing brush with an excavator and at the time the snake began to strike at the machine. In an attempt to defend themselves, the crew used the excavator to dispatch the snake and ultimately killed it in "self-defense" according to the DEC. DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officer Hameline responded to the scene and seized the carcass.

After the snake was recovered the DEC’s Bureau of Wildlife was notified and contacted Cornell University for further analysis of the snake. The origin of the snake is unknown but it was likely released into the wild from a pet enclosure according to the DEC.
