Greene County Deputy Saves Injured Hawk From Roadway

Something is in the air, this is the third bird rescues we've heard about over the last few weeks.

Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Rescues Injured Hawk

The Greene County Sheriff's Office shared details about a recent rescue that involved one of their deputies and an injured hawk.

According to the Greene County Sheriff's Office Facebook page Deputy Barry Hill was on patrol when he received an interesting call. There was a hawk in the roadway.

Deputy Hill responded and "was able to retrieve the bird and place it in his patrol car."

In the Facebook post they explain:

He then covered the bird’s head to induce calmness during transport. The hawk was quickly turned over to ENCON officers for further evaluation.

There's something about seeing a bird in the backseat of cop car that makes us giggle a little bit.

Rescued Hawk Recovering at Local Animal Sanctuary

Looks like the hawk that was rescued in Greene County is making a full recovery.

Catskill Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation shared an update on social media. They explain that when they brought the red-tailed hawk in, they reached out to "expert raptor Rehabber" Xen from the rescue Whispering Willow Wild Care.

During the intake exam, they "determined that the juvenile male hawk was likely hit by a car and was stunned."

From there they transferred the red-tailed hawk to  Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center "for further evaluation and a little TLC."

Catskill Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation said "This was a seamless collaboration among many agencies."

2 Owls Recently Rescued in the Hudson Valley

As mentioned earlier this is one of 3 recent bird rescues in the area.

2 of the other rescues were of owls. In early July 2026, the Dutchess County Sheriff was dispatched to the Rail Trail where an owl was visibly injured.

Then back in June, an owl was spotted outside of an Orange County Government building and first responders were called in to get the bird to safety.

From what we gather both owls were transported to animal rehabilitation centers and will hopefully be out, back in the wild soon.
