Many students across New York are preparing to take Regents Exams in the coming weeks, and schools are reminding them to leave all electronic devices at home before heading to the testing room.

This time of year can be stressful for students, parents, and school staff as thousands of students get ready to take the state exams. School districts across New York are reminding families that cell phones and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited in testing rooms.

Cell Phone Ban in New York Schools

The school year is quickly coming to a close, marking the first year of New York's statewide cell phone restrictions introduced last year by Governor Kathy Hochul. The "Bell to Bell" initiative was designed to reduce distractions by limiting student access to cell phones during the school day.

While many students have adjusted to the new rules in the classroom, schools are reminding everyone that the restrictions also apply during Regents Exams.

All New York schools are required to follow the same state testing guidelines when administering Regents Exams, but districts have some flexibility in how they enforce cell phone policies. Some schools have announced plans to collect devices before testing begins, while others are instructing students to leave phones at home.

Wappingers Central School District Cell Phone Plan

According to a message sent to parents, students taking Regents Exams in the Wappingers Central School District are being told that schools will not collect, hold, or store electronic devices. Instead, students are being advised to leave phones at home or in their vehicles before arriving for exams. Any device brought into the building remains the sole responsibility of the student.

Students are not permitted to have cell phones or any electronic communication devices in testing locations. The policy doesn't just apply to phones. Tablets, laptops, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, cameras, eReaders, MP3 players, and any device capable of recording or playing audio or video are also prohibited.

State officials have also reminded students that the rule applies throughout the entire testing session, including breaks such as trips to the restroom.

New York State Cell Phone Policy Has Severe Consequences

New York State testing guidelines indicate that if a student is found with a prohibited device during a Regents Exam, the exam will be invalidated, resulting in no score being awarded.

With months of studying leading up to these exams, officials are urging students not to take any chances. If you're heading to a Regents Exam this month, leave your phone at home. It could be the difference between earning a score and having your exam invalidated.
