Stissing House Gains Popularity in Pine Plains, NY

In 2022, Stissing House was brought back to life in Pine Plains New York thanks to chef and owner Clare de Boer. Originally, Stissing House opened in 1782 and was tapped as a local watering hole for Pine Plains natives. On the history section of their website, they add  that back in the 1700s "The building accommodated a tavern, beds for travelers" and was considered "America’s first domed ballroom."

Now, Stissing House is a Colonial tavern serving American cuisine in a cozy atmosphere with space to host large feasts or dine with friends. Clearly de Boer is doing something right as Stissing House has been a hot spot for celebs like Al Roker and, the lifestyle queen, Martha Stewart.

Stissing House Makes New York Times 'Restaurant' List 2023

Earlier this week, the New York Times released their Restaurant List 2023 with 50 restaurants across the US that they're excited about. Of course, there were several picks for New York with a focus on New York City. But one Times writer praised the newest Pine Plains restaurant.

Priya Krishna of the New York Times spoke highly of the Stissing House writing:

Clare de Boer is that dinner-party host whose spreads are simple, effortless and maddeningly good. And Stissing House, a historic tavern with a big, open hearth, is a worthy showcase for her talents. In Ms. de Boer’s hands, a simple cup of beef broth garnished with a rosemary sprig can feel like it has healing powers; a plate of ham and pickles tastes luxurious; and a tall, hefty slice of coconut cake is light and airy. Practically everything here is cooked over a wood fire, often seasoned with not much more than some herbs, salt and Ms. de Boer’s deft, seemingly magical, touch.

This isn't the first time that the Pine Plains restaurant has earned a huge honor.

In early 2023, Stissing House was named a semi-finalist for the 2023 James Beard Awards for Best New Restaurant. Other nominees included with Lil' Deb's Oasis in Hudson and chefs Shaina Loew-Banayan (Cafe Mutton, Hudson), Paolo Garcia Mendoza (Karenderya, Nyack), and Sohail Zandi ( Brushland Eating House, Bovina).

While Stissing House may be one of the best in New York State and America, there are so many great restaurants to choose from in the Hudson Valley. Take a look at 18 of the most loved stores and restaurants across the region below.
