A school in Kiryas Joel appeared to be illegally operating in defiance of Governor Andrew Cuomo's executive orders.

Mid Hudson News reports that the Orange County Health Department served a school in Kiryas Joel with a cease and desist order. The United Talmudic Academy (UTA) of Kiryas Joel Boys School was served with a cease and desist order on Thursday, May 21. The cease and desist order came after reports of illegal operation were made. The cease and desist order was made by the Orange County Department of Health and the New York State Police.

According to Mid Hudson News, reports of illegal operation of the school came in on Wednesday, May 20. The New York State Police and Orange County Department of Health visited UTA in Kiryas Joel and saw what appeared to be hundreds of students inside that were not wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and were not social distancing. The health officials verbally notified the school to shut down immediately. Orange County officials notified Governor Andrew Cuomo's office of the illegal operation and from there, the cease and desist order was served.

On May 1, 2020, Governor Cuomo announced that all New York schools would remain closed for the rest of the school year. On May 21, 2020, Governor Cuomo announced that there would be no in-classroom summer school this year. He added that schools should plan as if they will be reopening in September.
