If you've driven north or south on Route 9W, you've passed by this landmark ice cream shop whether you've realized it or not. According to their page on Google, it says they're permanently closed but they are in fact opening up in a few weeks. An earlier version of this article stated they'd be closing, but when verified with additional sources we were able to get the correct information.

Our friend Steve lives just outside of Newburgh and has been frequenting Dairy Island his whole life, he was able to offer some unique perspective on the place and some funny stories.

Growing up he and his family spent a lot of time there. He could remember hot summer days grabbing a light dinner, sitting around the back of his parents' van and of course going back for ice cream when dinner was done. Having started a family of his own, he was able to carry on the tradition with his children, calling it by their code name, 'DI'.

When you go to a place as much as Steve did, you tend to get to know the people running the joint. In fact, he may or may not have once gone there seven days in a row. Owners Bob and Louise would give his family the leftover ice cream at the end of the season each year to tide them over to the next.

But perhaps my favorite story that he shared was on the day of his cousins' wedding, he was one of the groomsmen. The wedding party arrived at the church around 30 minutes early so he jogged down Route 9W in his tuxedo to get himself a chocolate shake. Now that's dedication.

The reason for the delay in opening is the weather. If you're looking for a cool summer job you might want to apply in a few weeks!
