Hudson Valley health officials are asking residents to help stop the spread of the highly contagious measles virus.

Measles, as well as the measles vaccine, have recently been the focus of national attention. Now, the Department of Health has shared that the disease has arrived in Orange County, NY.

Measles Cases Confirmed in New York State

Measles, which is spread through the air by coughs and sneezes, had been classified as "eliminated" in the United States in the year 2000. In 2025, however, there have been 12 reported "outbreaks" with nearly 1,000 confirmed cases, including in New York State.

Who Is Most at Risk from Measles?

The virus can easily infect anyone. Children, especially those under 5 years old, are at the highest risk of severe symptoms including high fever, pneumonia, and even encephalitis (brain swelling).

Other symptoms include a runny nose, red, watery eyes, and a rash that begins on the head and face before spreading down the body. Officials are now reminding the public about the best recommended protection against its spread.

"Measles has been confirmed in Orange County, NY", the Orange County, NY Department of Health recently shared on Facebook (below). They went on to remind residents that the best protection against the virus is vaccination.

Getting the Measles Vaccine in New York

The measles vaccine is most effective with two doses, with children receiving the first dose between 12 and 15 months, and the second between four and six years old. It is also not recommended to travel with unvaccinated children to areas with known measles outbreaks.
