New York’s Oldest Business Is Right Here in the Hudson Valley
There's a business in New York state that opened nearly 100 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed... and its right here in the Hudson Valley.
Since the original 13 colonies were formed on the east coast, it shouldn't come as a big surprise that such a historic establishment would be in New York. As someone who grew up in Accord, NY, however, I'm especially proud that not only is one of the oldest buildings in the country in my home of Ulster County, but the oldest business in the state is right down the road from my childhood home.
History of Accord, NY in Ulster County
Some things in Accord, NY have changed dramatically. Its once-famous train station has now been converted to an ultra-modern Airbnb, and mansions owned by Hollywood actors are now considered somewhat "normal". One thing has remained constant, however, is Saunderskill Farms
Saunderskill Farms in Accord, NY is the State's Oldest Business
Saunderskill Farms, recognized as the oldest continually-running business in New York state, was granted to the Schoonmakers in 1663 (342 years later, I had the pleasure of attending Rondout Valley High School with one of their descendants). They have continually farmed the land since 1680, and are one of the rare businesses to have been recognized with a special honor: a tricentennial award.
Oldest Family-Run Businesses in the Country
Given by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Saunderskill Farms is not only 56 years away from celebrating their quadricentennial, but its longevity also puts it in the running for one of the longest-run businesses in the entire country (with farming operations beginning in 1638, Shirley Plantation in Virginia is currently recognized as the longest-running family-run business).

Though their roots trace back to before the United States claimed their independence, Saunderskill Farms is now a decidedly-modern business that has evolved with the passing years. With a farm market, a greenhouse, and pick-your-own fields at 5100 Route 209 in Accord, Saunderskill Farms continues to be an integral part of the Hudson Valley.
History is hiding around every corner in New York state, and while some businesses are still going strong after three centuries, others have unfortunately needed to close their doors no matter how popular they once were.
