An early morning bender ended after an Ulster County man allegedly drove drunk, crashed his car and fled the scene.

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office charged 28-year-old Shane R. Richardson of Milton with driving while intoxicated, a felony. He was also charged with refusal to submit to a chemical test, leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident and failure to stop at a stop sign.

On Tuesday around 6:30 a.m., Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 32 near Forest Road in the Town of Plattekill. Officers found a damaged vehicle that was left off the roadway.

Witnesses told authorities that the driver fled the area after the accident.

Police searched the area and soon found the alleged driver, Richardson. A further investigation revealed that the driver had been operating the vehicle while in an intoxicated state, officials say.

Richardson was arrested and transported to the Wallkill substation. He was arraigned in Town of Plattekill Justice Court and released on his own recognizance.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by New York State Police.
