Does anyone know what's going on with the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office? It's been a commonly asked question for a number of weeks, in fact, since just after the new year.

Now, amidst the controversy of the newly established DOGE, Department of Government Efficiency, this Dutchess County Social Security Office, more specifically, the Main Street Poughkeepsie location, has been spotted on the 'DOGE" website, but why?

Poughkeepsie Social Security Office 'Shutters For Renovations'

Back at the end of January, those looking to take care of business at the Main Street, Poughkeepsie branch of the Social Security Office found out that the location was scheduling a closure, 'temporarily,' for renovations that would expand services. This closure comes not long after the Newburgh SS Office permanently closed, relocating services to Middletown.

Aside from claims of a temporary office with limited services available in late February, little to no additional information was provided to local residents about plans for reopening, and local officials started to ask questions.

Pat Ryan, District 18 Representative, has been vocal about his concerns about the status of the Poughkeepsie Social Security Office and local access to services for his constituent. Just this week (February 27th), Ryan shared information about a surprising find on the DOGE government site.

DOGE Savings Site Identifies Poughkeepsie Office

The DOGE website, with a .gov web address, and a small text banner across the top with a flag emoji and the words 'An official website of the United States government,' has an entire section dedicated to savings and a leaderboard.  Currently, the site indicates that the total estimated savings are at $65 billion. The site alleges that number comes from a 'combination of fraud detection/deletion, contract/lease cancellations, contract/lease renegotiations, asset sales, grant cancellations, workforce reductions, programmatic changes, and regulatory savings.'

While the site does admit that there may be a lag in reporting, and that the site will be updated two times a week (for now), it asks for any 'discrepencies' (yes, spelled that way) to be reported to the @DOGE x account.

Number nine on the 'Agency Efficiency Leaderboard' is the SSA, Social Security Administration, and Pat Ryan recently discovered that the Poughkeepsie SSA location is listed as 'savings.'

Sharing on social media that the Poughkeepsie Office 'just showed up on the DOGE website under savings,' Ryan then went on to reinforce that this has been a fear since the office announced they would temporarily close for renovations.

The site does not provide much when it comes to concrete information, only that the current lease for the location is $359.135, and that the 'end of term' is planned for 7/31/25.

Though residents are being encouraged to utilize the online services, for those wanting to speak to a representative in person, the nearest open SSA offices are Middletown, Peekskill, and Hudson, NY. Already, the distance to these offices is proving to be challenging for many.

U.S. Government's Updated "Do Not Travel" List

Many people travel at the end of the year for the holidays or to use up vacation days that may expire. These countries have a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory issued on them by the U.S. Government and should be avoided.
